Links to Other Archives

This page is provided in an effort to help you locate materials not found at the PCA Historical Center.
There is a great wealth of information to be found in the nation's archives, but most people have never been educated on how to locate these resources. As a rule, archives hold unique materials - items not otherwise published and thus unique to a particular archive, whereas libraries generally house published works that can often be found in any number of other libraries.

Thus the very uniqueness of an archival collection often works to make that same collection difficult to locate. Where for instance do you turn to find the papers of Ernest Hemingway? [They were placed at the J.F.K. Presidential Library, incidentally] To solve the problem of locating a collection, several catalogs have been compiled over the years and the best of these is the National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections. Much of that catalog is now available for reference on the Internet, with a search engine provided for locating the materials in question.

And in recent years, an additional tool, Archives Grid, has come online. This service is operated by the OCLC organization which also sponsors WorldCat. "ArchiveGrid includes over four million records describing archival materials, bringing together information about historical documents, personal papers, family histories, and more. With over 1,000 different archival institutions represented, ArchiveGrid helps researchers looking for primary source materials held in archives, libraries, museums and historical societies."
